Description:
Part 1. 5pts. Choose a character or creature from Greek mythology that you would like to learn more about. You may not choose Achilles, Odysseus, or Iphigeneia. I am able to help you make a choice. Read some different stories about this character or creature using theoi.com and/or Wikipedia and/or resources listed in the library’s Classics database. Identify at least one significant discrepancy between two primary sources relaying the various stories you read. Part 2. 10pts. Identify the two primary sources (see course syllabus) that give the divergent accounts you describe in Part 1. Note that theoi.com excerpts from its ancient sources below its encyclopedia entries; look at the italicized heading of the passage. Wikipedia footnotes its ancient sources. You must identify two (and only two) ancient sources of stories about your character, not including any of the primary sources assigned for this course. Learn what you can about these ancient sources from introductory material in the book itself or from GVSU’s library resources. Identify each source, explaining when it was written, where it was written, and what ancient genre it was (history? tragedy? comedy? architectural writing?). Part 3. 5pts. Identify modern editions of the ancient sources. Provide the following facts of publication: 1. Author 2. Title 3. Editor/compiler/translator 4. Edition (if not the first) 5. Volume number (if part of multi-volume work) 6. Series title (if applicable) 7. City 8. Publisher 9. Date 10. Page numbers (if applicable).
